Description of Work
This is an anticipated vacancy. This position is expected to be available on March 01, 2026.

The primary purpose of the Industrial Hygiene Consultant position is to provide technical and program support as an environmental toxicologist to the Underground Storage Tank Section, Superfund Section and on an as-needed basis to the Hazardous Waste Section, Solid Waste Section, and Brownfields Program, within the Division of Waste Management. The position frequently interacts with staff, the public, and regulated community.

Key Responsibilities:

• Responsible for determining health based clean up levels for soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, and indoor air stemming from contaminated sites.

• Responsible for reviewing human health and ecological risk assessments, reports, and inquiries.

• Responsible for evaluating and calculating human health and ecological risk target levels.

• Responsible for Quality Assurance and Quality Control reviews of analytical data and issuance of Health Risk Evaluations.

• Responsible for calculating levels from vapors as part of structural vapor intrusion analysis and conducting other toxicological evaluations and duties as needed.

The Division of Waste Management is responsible for protecting the public health and environment through assuring that solid and hazardous waste and underground storage tanks are managed properly, and existing contamination is cleaned up across the State of North Carolina. This is accomplished through the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Superfund and Underground Storage Tank Sections, and the Brownfields Redevelopment Section. This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene inspections: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
