Salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Officers varies as follows:
Duty location can affect pay rates, including higher locality pay for federal law enforcement in certain areas. Fully trained Border Patrol Officers may qualify for an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This role features a career ladder structure, allowing for grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 through GS-12, with eligibility for promotions after 52 weeks in the lower grade level.
All Border Patrol Officers can choose from a variety of federal employment benefits, including health and insurance plans, generous leave programs, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan—similar to traditional and ROTH 401(k) plans.
*Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers may receive up to a $20,000 incentive, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remainder for accepting prioritized locations.
*Retention Incentive* Officers may also be eligible for up to $40,000 in additional incentives distributed over their first four years of employment.

This experience demonstrates capability in making arrests, exercising firearms judgment, and maintaining effective communication on law enforcement matters.
Other Requirements:
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
Residency: Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: Candidates must not exceed their 40th birthday at the time of selection, with some exemptions for current or former federal law enforcement personnel.
Veterans' Preference: Eligible veterans may receive special consideration, and the age restriction does not apply.
Formal Training: After hiring, you'll undergo intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy for about six months, covering laws, operations, driver training, and firearms. Fluency in Spanish is essential and will be enhanced during training.
