The Manager of System Coding contributes to LCMC Health's financial strength, compliance and overall performance by providing leadership for Coding and Coding Compliance functions. This role oversees the coding department, supervision and daily operations, and ensures timely, accurate coding for charge capture, diagnoses and procedures to support appropriate DRG assignment. The position requires proven leadership and management skills to supervise personnel and drive compliant coding practices.

Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day department administrative operations, including planning, directing and scheduling workloads.
  • Oversee coding functions associated with billing and coding.
  • Provide ongoing instruction on ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs and E/M assignment.
  • Manage edits, denial work queues and coding workflow to ensure timely processing.
  • Monitor DNFB and charge capture to ensure timely coding and processing.
  • Implement and monitor adherence to standardized workflows, productivity and quality standards.
  • Plan and implement new procedures, maintain staffing levels, make budgetary recommendations and lead coding-related projects.
  • Provide analysis to monitor correct coding, monitor denials for trends and maximize facility reimbursement.
  • Respond to external and internal audits for government and private payers.
  • Be accountable for attainment of goals and revenue cycle KPIs.
  • Maintain communication with leadership on backlogs and department needs affecting employees, patients, physicians and other customers.
  • Maintain knowledge of coding principles and regulatory requirements related to billing and documentation.
  • Review and approve personnel matters related to interviews, hires, evaluations, counseling, training and terminations as appropriate; support staff development and orientations per standards.
  • Collaborate with system leaders to ensure accountability and coordination between Coding and other departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 years of hands-on coding experience with a high school diploma, including 2 years in acute care or physician coding leadership (e.g., supervisor, coordinator, team lead).
  • 2 years of acute care or physician coding leadership experience with an Associates degree.
  • Education: Required HS Diploma; Preferred: Bachelors or Associates degree in health information management, medical records administration, health services administration or related field.
  • Licenses & Certifications: RHIT, RHIA or CCS, or internal staff who are not certified must obtain medical coding certification.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG and APC coding guidelines.
  • Extensive knowledge of hospital and professional coding including provider-based billing.
  • Experience with concurrent coding reviews.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and classification systems.
  • Understanding of privacy and security regulations governing information practices.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and provide education to support a learning organization.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, set priorities and meet objectives; adapt to change and handle challenges proactively.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians and managerial staff at all levels.
