POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary role is to create tooling designs and capabilities for the manufacturing of composite parts. Responsible for composites tool modeling and design; contributes to the tooling strategy of the business. This position supports the New Product Development (NPD) group as well as New Product Introduction (NPI) and sustaining programs at Unitech Composites and across APEX Space & Defense Systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, design and model tooling for Layup, CNC and Assembly of composite parts
  • Model tooling designs in Catia or Solid Works based on part design
  • Select appropriate tooling materials
  • Organize and lead tooling design reviews; Internally, with Customers, and with Vendors.
  • Develop internal tooling manufacturing capabilities and strategy
  • Support developing strategic supply base of tool vendors
  • Create 'Tooling Statement of Work' documentation for tooling vendors
  • Support kaizen events and tooling modifications to hit cycle time goals
  • Maintain tooling specifications
  • Ensure tooling meets all part requirements
  • Create Model Based Definition (MBD) and 2-D tooling drawings as required
  • Support manufacturing operations throughout the tool lifetime including new tooling selection and installation, tool care and maintenance, tool repair, process improvement, and cost reduction.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with tool design for thermoset composites (lamination, trim, bond fixtures and assembly tooling) and fabrication of these types of tools.
  • Proficiency 3D modeling tools in Catia. Solid Works experience is also desired.
  • Effectively communicates information and responds to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, and other employees of the organization.
  • Coordinate with appropriate focals in operations, supply chain, and engineering
  • Deals with problems involving several known variables in situations of routine nature.
  • Frequently makes decisions of both minor and major importance, which may affect the work operations of other employees.
  • Demonstrated success in production within a fast-paced, technically focused environment is essential. Must be hands on and capable of producing, managing, and implementing tooling designs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Must be results-oriented and demonstrate analytical thinking, innovation, flexibility in dealing with changing and ambiguous situations.
  • Demonstrated success working in highly collaborative multi-function environment, with a track record of accomplishment with measurable business impact and managing within a matrix environment.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Sciences or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of related work experience with recent experience supporting a manufacturing organization preferred. Composites tooling design experience preferred.

Computer Skills: Proficient 3D modeling in Catia, Microsoft Office including proficiency in Excel and Word, Solid Works experience desired.
